Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was directed by Steven Spielberg, and stars Harrison Ford, Kate Capshaw, Jonathan Ke Quan, and Amrish Puri.
I didn’t know this was a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark until pretty recently. Did anyone know that already or am I just an idiot?
I have real problems with Temple of Doom. It’s comparable to an amusement park ride, in that our main trio generally are not pushing forward the plot. Instead, they are on the ride, being pushed forward by the plot. There are very few moments where Indiana Jones actually makes a decision or does something to move the plot forward.
I think most would expect Short Round to be the annoying one in this movie (being a child), but for me, it was actually Willie. She was constantly acting ignorant and stupid, to the point where it wasn’t comic relief; it was just bad. I actually found Short Round to be pretty funny, and I thought he and Indy played off of each other well.
There is a lot to love about Temple of Doom, though. The score, having been done by John Williams again, was amazing. The action sequences are phenomenal and quite unique. The mine cart chase and ending on the rope bridge are very entertaining.
The entire air of mystery is cool as well. Everything in the palace and the actual temple is pretty great. It’s just the inactivity of the protagonists that’s the issue.
Even though it feels like a ride, Temple of Doom certainly is a fun one.
